Frequently Asked Questions
Everything about browser-based text to speech.
Which browsers support text to speech?
Chrome, Edge, and Safari have the best support with a large selection of voices. Firefox has partial support with fewer voices. The tool will show a warning if your browser does not support the Web Speech API.
Can I download the audio as an MP3 or WAV?
The Web Speech API routes audio directly to your OS speaker and cannot produce a downloadable file. For downloadable WAV files, use our Text to Audio tool — it generates real audio files using a neural voice engine running locally in your browser.
Why do I see only a few voices?
Available voices depend on your operating system and browser. Windows, macOS, and Android each install a different set of voices. Some browsers also download additional voices — check your system's language settings to add more.
Does my text get sent anywhere?
No. The Web Speech API runs entirely within your browser using the speech engine built into your operating system. Your text is never uploaded to any server.
What is the maximum text length?
The Web Speech API has no enforced character limit, but very long texts may behave differently across browsers. For best results with long documents, split the text into paragraphs and play each section separately.
