Lorem ipsum is placeholder text made from scrambled Latin. Designers use it to fill a layout so people judge the type and spacing, not the words. It comes from a passage by the Roman writer Cicero, cut and changed so it no longer means anything.

It is based on Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. Letraset type sheets spread it in the 1960s, and desktop publishing software spread it later. The often repeated claim that printers used it in the 1500s has no evidence behind it.

On its own it means nothing. It is cut from a line by Cicero that roughly says no one loves pain itself because it is pain. Lorem is the end of the word dolorem, so the opening is a broken fragment, not a sentence.

No. The output is plain text with no tags. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line, so you can wrap each one in a paragraph tag yourself or paste the text straight into a design tool or CMS field that adds its own formatting.

No. This generator makes Latin lorem ipsum only, from a fixed list of 124 different Latin words. There are no English, themed or non-Latin script options. For testing other scripts, paste sample text in that language into your layout instead.

Some word processors have a built-in shortcut. Typing =lorem() on a new line and pressing Enter makes three paragraphs, and =lorem(2,5) makes two paragraphs of five sentences. It needs AutoCorrect's replace-as-you-type setting on. Use this generator when you need text for a browser, design file or code.
