How to Unlock a PDF

Add your PDF.

How do I unlock a PDF for free?

Can I unlock a PDF without the password?

Yes, if the PDF opens without a password and only blocks printing, copying or editing. Leave the password box empty and those limits are removed. If the PDF asks for a password before it opens, you need that password. This tool can't guess or crack it.

What if I forgot the PDF password?

This tool can't recover a forgotten open password. Without it you'll see a message that the PDF needs its password. Ask the sender for the password or a fresh copy.

What is the difference between an open password and an owner password?

An open (user) password stops the PDF from opening at all. An owner password lets it open but blocks actions such as printing, copying or editing. This tool removes owner limits on its own, and removes an open password once you type it in.

How do I unlock a PDF so I can print it?

A greyed-out Print option means the PDF has a print restriction. Add the file here, leave the password empty and click Unlock PDF. Open the downloaded copy in any reader and printing is no longer blocked.

Does unlocking change the content or quality of my PDF?

No. The tool removes the encryption and copies the pages as they are. Nothing is turned into images, so text stays searchable and selectable, links keep working and pictures keep their resolution. The file size can change a little.

Which kinds of PDF protection can it remove?

It removes standard PDF password security, including RC4, AES-128 and AES-256 encryption, plus print, copy and edit limits. Files locked to a digital certificate or an e-book store may not open, and the tool will then say the PDF needs its password.

Why does it say my password is incorrect?

The text you typed does not match the password set on the file. Passwords are case-sensitive, so check Caps Lock and use the eye icon to see what you typed. A pasted password can carry an extra space at the end; delete it and click Unlock PDF again.

Is the PDF unlocked permanently?

Yes. The downloaded copy has no encryption left, so it opens without a password, with printing and copying allowed. Your original file isn't changed, so keep it if you still want the protected version.

Can I unlock several PDFs at once?

No. The tool takes one PDF at a time, up to 200 MB. After you download, click Reset to go back to the upload box and add the next file. There's no daily limit on how many PDFs you unlock.
