Does this upscaler upload my images to a server?
No. All processing happens entirely in your browser via ONNX Runtime Web (WebGPU/WASM). Your images never leave your device — upload, inference, and download are 100% local and private.
What image formats and sizes are supported?
You can upload JPG, JPEG, PNG, and WebP images up to 4000×4000 pixels. Output is exported as PNG to preserve the quality gained from upscaling. Inputs over 1000px on the long side are auto-shrunk before inference — browser-based AI can't reliably handle larger than that on mid-range devices. A server-side mode with higher limits is on our roadmap.
What is the difference between 2× and 4×?
2× uses the Real-ESRGAN x2plus model (~34 MB). 4× uses x4plus (~34 MB) and produces sharper edges, more reconstructed detail, and stronger deblur. Both handle blur and noise — pick 2× for speed, 4× for maximum quality.
Why does the first use take longer?
The Real-ESRGAN model (~35 MB) downloads from a CDN on first use and is cached in your browser. All subsequent uses skip the download — the model is stored locally and the tool works offline.
How does AI upscaling differ from simple resizing?
Traditional resizing (bilinear, bicubic) just stretches existing pixels — edges become blurry. Real-ESRGAN was trained on synthetic blur, noise, and compression artifacts, so it reconstructs sharper edges, cleaner textures, and removes degradation that bicubic resizing can't fix.
