Frequently Asked Questions

Currency conversion and exchange rates explained.

Where do the exchange rates come from?

Exchange rates are sourced from Frankfurter.app, which provides official reference rates published daily by the European Central Bank (ECB). These are mid-market rates used as a neutral benchmark — they may differ from rates your bank or exchange bureau offers.

How often are rates updated?

ECB reference rates are published every business day around 4 PM CET. Rates do not update on weekends or ECB holidays. The last-updated timestamp on the tool shows the exact date of the rates in use.

Are these rates the same as my bank offers?

No. ECB reference rates are mid-market rates — the midpoint between buy and sell prices. Banks, airports, and exchange services add a margin (spread) on top. The spread varies widely — from 0.5% at online banks to 5–10% at airport kiosks.

Which currencies are supported?

The tool supports all currencies tracked by the ECB, plus additional currencies via the Frankfurter API — over 170 currencies in total, including all G20 currencies, major emerging market currencies (BRL, INR, ZAR, etc.), and most smaller economies.

Does this work offline?

Rates are cached in your browser after the first load. If you revisit the tool without internet access, you'll see the last successfully fetched rates with a note on their age. A fresh connection is needed to update to today's rates.
