AVI to MP4 Conversion FAQs
Helpful answers about converting legacy AVI video files to modern MP4
Why can't my iPhone or smart TV play AVI files?
AVI is a container format developed by Microsoft in 1992. While the container itself is old, the real issue is the video codec inside — common codecs like DivX, Xvid, and MPEG-4 Part 2 are not supported by iOS, tvOS, or most modern streaming apps. Converting to H.264 MP4 solves this because H.264 has hardware decoding support on virtually every modern device.
What codecs inside AVI does the converter support?
The converter supports the most common AVI video codecs including DivX, Xvid, MPEG-4 Part 2, H.264, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, Cinepak, and Indeo. Audio codecs supported include MP3, PCM, AC-3, and MP2. If your AVI was created before 2010, it almost certainly uses one of these supported codecs.
Will the converted MP4 be the same quality as the AVI?
At high quality settings, the MP4 output will be visually indistinguishable from the source AVI. Since re-encoding always involves some processing, we recommend choosing High quality mode. The source AVI's own codec quality is the primary factor — very low-quality or highly compressed DivX sources will also produce lower-quality MP4 output.
Why is my AVI file so large compared to equivalent MP4 files?
Many AVI files contain uncompressed PCM audio or use inefficient older video codecs that generate large files. H.264 MP4 is far more efficient: it uses B-frames, motion estimation, and entropy coding to store the same visual information in a fraction of the space. A 1 GB DivX AVI might become 300–500 MB as an equivalent-quality H.264 MP4.
How do I convert large AVI files (several GB)?
The converter handles large AVI files. Processing time scales with file size, but since everything runs in your browser, there are no upload limitations. For very large files (5+ GB), make sure your browser tab stays open during processing. Consider closing other tabs to free up memory.
Is this AVI to MP4 converter safe for old personal video files?
Yes. Your AVI file is processed entirely in your browser's local environment using WebAssembly. The file is never transmitted to any server, never logged, and never stored. Conversion happens only on your device and the file is cleared from memory as soon as you're done.
