How to Find the Difference Between Dates

How many days are there between two dates?
Subtract the earlier date from the later one. Enter both dates here and click Calculate, and Total Days shows the count. From January 1 to December 25, 2026 is 358 days, which the Weeks row shows as 51 weeks and 1 day.
Does the count include the start and end dates?
It counts the end date but not the start date, so Monday to Friday is 4 days. To count both days, as many rental, leave or event rules do, add 1 to Total Days. The tool has no switch for this.
How do I find the difference in years, months and days?
Read the Years row for whole years and the Months row for the whole months left after them. The tool doesn't list leftover days next to months: March 15 to June 10, 2026 shows 2 months, and the 26 extra days are not shown.
Why does the Months row show 9 and not the total months?
The Months row holds only the months left after full years. January 1, 2020 to October 19, 2026 shows Years 6 and Months 9, meaning 6 years and 9 months. For total months, multiply the years by 12 and add the months: 81.
How many weeks are between two dates?
Divide the total days by 7. The Weeks row does that for you and shows the leftover days as well, such as 51 weeks 1 day for January 1 to December 25, 2026. Part weeks show as days, not decimals.
Does it account for leap years?
Yes. The count uses real calendar dates, so February 29 adds a day whenever it falls inside your range. January 1, 2024 to January 1, 2025 is 366 days, and February 28 to March 1 is 2 days in 2024 but 1 day in 2025.
What if the end date is before the start date?
You get the same answer either way. The calculator swaps the two dates and returns a positive count, so October 19 to January 1 matches January 1 to October 19. Nothing on screen marks which date came first.
Can it count business days without weekends?
No. Every calendar day counts, weekends and holidays included. For a rough working-day count, multiply the full weeks by 5 and add the leftover weekdays by hand. Public holidays differ by country, so take those off yourself.
How do I calculate a date difference in Excel?
Subtract the cells: =B1-A1 gives the days between the dates in A1 and B1. For years and leftover months, use =DATEDIF(A1,B1,"y") and =DATEDIF(A1,B1,"ym"). This page shows the same kind of day, year and month counts without a spreadsheet.
Can it count hours or minutes between dates?
No. It takes dates without clock times, so the smallest unit is one day. For a rough hour count, multiply Total Days by 24, so 14 days is 336 hours. Daylight saving changes don't affect the day count.
Can I compare a date with itself?
No. When both boxes hold the same date, Calculate stays grayed out instead of showing 0 days. Pick two different dates; the next day gives 1. After you change a date, click Calculate again to refresh the result.
Is this date difference calculator free and private?
Yes, it's free to use as often as you like, with no account. The two dates are worked out in your browser and never leave it. On the live site, Google Analytics counts page visits and ads load, but neither receives your dates.
