AVIF to JPG Conversion FAQs
Answers to common questions about converting AVIF images to JPEG
What is AVIF and why might I need to convert it to JPG?
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format that offers significantly better compression than JPG, often producing files 50% smaller at the same quality. However, it is not universally supported — older operating systems, image editors, and platforms may not open AVIF files. Converting to JPG ensures the image can be viewed and used on any device or software.
Will the JPG look as good as the AVIF original?
At high quality settings (85–95%), the JPG will look visually very close to the AVIF original. The main trade-off is file size: the JPG will be larger than the AVIF for the same visual quality, since AVIF is a more efficient format. You should also note that any HDR or wide-gamut colour data in the AVIF will be tone-mapped to standard sRGB in the JPG.
Does AVIF support transparency, and what happens to it in JPG?
Yes, AVIF supports alpha transparency. Since JPG does not support transparency, any transparent areas in your AVIF image will be filled with a solid background colour (white by default) in the converted JPG. If you need to preserve transparency, convert AVIF to PNG instead.
Why can my browser view AVIF but my image editor cannot open the file?
Modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) include AVIF decoders, but standalone image editors and operating system image viewers may not have updated yet to support the format. Converting to JPG is the quickest way to open and work with AVIF images in any application.
Is there any quality loss when converting AVIF to JPG?
Yes, converting from any format to JPG involves lossy compression. However, by setting the quality level to 85% or higher, the artefacts are imperceptible in most images. For archival purposes always keep the original AVIF file.
Is the AVIF to JPG conversion private and secure?
Yes. The conversion runs entirely in your browser. AVIF files are decoded using your browser's built-in codec and encoded to JPG via the Canvas API — no data is sent to any server. Your images remain private throughout the process.
