JPG to AVIF Conversion Features
Leverage the power of the AV1 codec to serve smaller, sharper images on the modern web
Next-Gen AV1-Based Image Encoding
AVIF uses the AV1 video codec's intra-frame encoding, which is far more efficient than JPEG's DCT algorithm. The result is dramatically smaller files at the same perceived quality.
Browser-Native AVIF Encoding
Modern browsers encode AVIF natively via the Canvas API. Conversion happens locally on your device without any server dependency or upload wait time.
Better Quality at Lower Bitrates
AVIF's advanced compression handles gradients, skin tones, and fine detail more gracefully than JPG — fewer artefacts at smaller sizes, especially at aggressive compression levels.

JPG/JPEG vs AVIF: What Changes
Understanding the differences between JPG/JPEG and AVIF helps you choose the right format for your needs.
| Specification | JPG/JPEG | AVIF |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy | Lossy/Lossless |
| Quality | Good to Excellent | Excellent |
| Transparency | No | Yes |
| Animation | No | Yes |
| File Size | Small to Medium | Very Small |
Why convert from JPG/JPEG?
- Lossy compression reduces quality
- No transparency support
- Not ideal for graphics with sharp edges
Why choose AVIF?
- Best-in-class compression efficiency
- Supports both lossy and lossless compression
- HDR and wide color gamut support

JPG to AVIF Conversion FAQs
Everything you need to know about converting JPEG images to the AVIF format
What is AVIF and why is it better than JPG for the web?
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It typically produces files 40–55% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality, and handles gradients and fine detail with fewer compression artefacts. It also supports HDR, wide colour gamut, and alpha transparency — features JPG lacks. For web performance, AVIF is a significant upgrade over JPG.
Which browsers and platforms support AVIF?
As of 2024, AVIF is supported by Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari (macOS 13+ / iOS 16+). This covers the vast majority of modern web users. For full compatibility, best practice is to use a picture element with an AVIF source and a JPG fallback for older browsers.
Will converting JPG to AVIF degrade my image quality?
At quality settings of 60–80% (on a 0–100 scale), AVIF produces images that are visually indistinguishable from the JPG original but significantly smaller. Lower quality settings will introduce visible compression, but AVIF's artefacts are generally less harsh than JPG blocking at equivalent bitrates.
Does AVIF support transparency?
Yes. AVIF natively supports an alpha channel for full transparency, unlike JPG. While your JPG source has no transparency, the converted AVIF file can have transparency added if needed. This makes AVIF a strong alternative to PNG for transparent web graphics as well.
Can I convert multiple JPG files to AVIF at once?
Yes. The converter supports batch conversion — add multiple JPG files and they will all be converted to AVIF using the same quality settings. Each output file is named to match the original JPG.
Are my JPG files safe and private during AVIF conversion?
Yes. The conversion is entirely client-side. Your JPG images are read by your browser using the FileReader API, encoded to AVIF using the Canvas API, and downloaded to your device — no data ever leaves your machine and no server is involved.
