How do I convert AVIF to PNG for free?

Does converting AVIF to PNG lose quality?

No, not for a standard 8-bit AVIF. PNG is lossless, so the file holds exactly the pixels decoded from your AVIF, and our pixel check found zero differences. Detail the AVIF lost when it was first compressed can't come back, so any blur already there stays.

Does AVIF to PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. PNG has an alpha channel, so clear and half-clear areas stay that way; in our test a half see-through AVIF kept exactly the same transparency as a PNG. No background color is filled in, which suits logos, icons and cutouts.

Why is my PNG so much bigger than the AVIF?

AVIF squeezes photos far harder than lossless PNG can. Our test photo, 5376 by 3072 pixels, was 515 KB as an AVIF and 5.08 MB as a PNG, about ten times larger. Use Resize for a smaller PNG, or pick WebP or JPG in the format menu.

What does the Compression slider do for PNG?

It changes how tightly the PNG is packed, not how it looks. The Compression group starts closed and set to 90. In our test, 90 already gave the smallest file; 50 was about 12% bigger, and 1 left the PNG almost uncompressed at over 43 MB.

Is there a limit on bulk AVIF to PNG conversion?

There is no daily cap and no set number of files, only a 100 MB limit per AVIF. PNGs are large, so a big batch may use a lot of memory; split it if the tab slows. Files added later with Add More Files start as JPG, so press Apply to all files to switch them back.

Does it work with animated or HDR AVIF files?

Partly. An animated AVIF gives one still PNG of its first frame, with no notice on the tile. A 10-bit or HDR AVIF is saved as an 8-bit PNG with no HDR adjustment, so check bright areas. Standard 8-bit AVIF images convert exactly.

Should I convert AVIF to PNG or JPG?

Pick PNG when the image has a clear background, text or sharp edges, or will be edited again, since it keeps every pixel. Pick JPG for photos you only need to share: in our test the JPG was under a quarter of the PNG's size. Our AVIF to JPG converter sets JPG for you.

Why do my PNG colors look duller than the AVIF?

Strip metadata is on by default, and for PNG output it also drops the color profile, so wide-color (Display P3) images can look flatter. Before converting, open Advanced and turn off Strip metadata to keep the profile; the photo's other metadata stays too.

Is it safe to convert AVIF to PNG online?

Yes. Your AVIF is read and saved as a PNG by a worker inside this browser tab, and the image is never sent to our servers. The page fetches its image engine (about 14 MB) once, and we count basic usage like editor time, never file names or pictures.
