Free BMP to PNG Converter

Add the .bmp files to the box at the top, keep PNG as the output and press Convert All. Each PNG keeps the name of its BMP with a .png ending. It's free, needs no account, and the finished files carry no watermark.

No. PNG compression is lossless, so the color of every pixel comes out exactly as it went in. We checked this by decoding a BMP photo and its PNG and comparing them pixel by pixel, and they matched. Only Resize, if you turn it on, changes the picture.

Both keep every pixel, but BMP stores them with no compression while PNG packs them tightly. In our tests a 47.25 MB BMP photo became a 7.21 MB PNG, and a 3.09 MB BMP drawing shrank to 24.33 KB. PNG also shows in every web browser.

If the BMP is 32-bit with an alpha channel, its clear areas carry over to the PNG untouched. Most BMPs are 24-bit with no transparency, so their PNG has a solid background. To cut a background out, run the PNG through our Background Remover tool.

Open the Compression group in the settings. It starts at 90, which gave the smallest PNG in our tests; lower numbers make bigger files. The pixels stay the same at any setting. For a much smaller file, pick JPG or WebP, which drop some detail.

For a photo, JPG is usually the better pick when file size matters: our 47.25 MB BMP photo was 7.21 MB as PNG but 1.43 MB as JPG at quality 90. Keep PNG for screenshots, text, diagrams and pixel art, where every pixel must stay sharp.

Yes. Drop all your BMP files at once, with no cap on how many, and press Convert All. They're handled one by one, and a failed file can be retried by itself. Download All then saves every PNG together in a ZIP named pixconvert-batch.zip.

It reads standard Windows BMPs in 1, 4, 8, 24 and 32-bit color, including 8-bit files with RLE compression and the older OS/2 kind; we tested each one. 16-bit files are untested. The name must end in .bmp, as .dib isn't accepted yet.

Files added with Add More Files start as JPG instead of PNG. Before you press Convert All, choose PNG in the Output Format menu and press Apply to all files, so every bitmap is saved as PNG.

Yes. The first conversion downloads our roughly 14 MB image engine, and after that your bitmaps are decoded and saved as PNG by a worker in this browser tab, never on our servers. We count simple usage, like editor time, but not file names or pictures.
